BACKGROUND

Land’s Edge is a collection of cottages and apartments in a little slow-town called Struisbaai, a friendly, colourful coastal settlement in South Africa. On the southernmost edge of Africa, in fact, where the last of its sandy shores tumble into the oceans. The waters are famous for being the place where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.

One of my earliest sketches evolved into a supporting mark that makes its appearance frequently in the brand’s collateral.

The Mama of Struisbaai
An honest fable

Some days you’ll find her on the wharf, with a basket full of fish and hair in a scarf. Other days, you’ll see her sitting on the stoop of her home with all her friends. Peeling potatoes and collapsing into belly laughs. Honest and unapologetic. If you drive by church on a Sunday, you’ll hear her singing. Loudly. Enthusiastically. A little out of tune, no doubt. She’ll come visit you when you’re sick, and she’ll make you a mean curry when you’re better. She’ll make you laugh but she’ll cry with you too, wiping the tears off her face with the tip of her apron.

Here, at the bottom of Africa, on the edge of the world, we all know her. In many lives and by many names. We’ve all met her. She is the best of all of us. She holds all our stories – the pride and the heartache of our history. Hers is the face that inspires us to do what we do, better each day. With kindness and an abundance of generosity. We hope you meet her too.
